Northen Cape - EFF and Black nationalist politicians in South Africa have renewed their calls for the abolishment of Orania, a small, privately run Afrikaner enclave located in the remote desert region of the Northern Cape. The small town of Orania has deemed to represent white supremacy and segregation.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Northern Cape submitted a memorandum demanding the dissolution of Orania, which they describe as a "state within a state" due to its exclusive white Afrikaner population and autonomous governance structure. The EFF has warned that it may take legal action if the government does not respond to its demands.

Orania, established in the early 1990s, was created as a cultural community aimed at preserving Afrikaner heritage and language. However, it has drawn criticism from political groups who argue that the town's racially exclusive policies are a legacy of apartheid and hinder efforts toward social and economic integration.

In a dramatic and successful operation, the Hawks have rescued American pastor Josh Sullivan, who was kidnapped at gunpoint during a church service in Motherwell, Gqeberha, in Eastern Cape, on April 10, 2025.

According to reports Pastor Sullivan, a visiting missionary and preacher from the United States, was taken in front of his congregation in a shocking incident that sent shockwaves through the local and international faith community. The armed men stormed the church premises and abducted the pastor during a prayer session, leading to a multi-agency investigation.

After nearly a week of intense investigations and intelligence gathering, the Hawks traced the location of the suspects and executed a well-coordinated rescue operation. Sullivan was found alive and reportedly in stable condition. Authorities have confirmed that several suspects have been arrested and are currently in Police custody.

Hawks' spokesperson Col. Katlego Mogale stated:

“We can confirm that Pastor Josh Sullivan has been rescued safely and reunited with the US Embassy officials. Investigations are ongoing, and more details will be shared as they unfold.”

The motive behind the kidnapping is still under investigation. This incident has raised serious concerns about safety around places of worship, and security measures are expected to be tightened in our country. The incident was also deemed as a factor that can hinder the tourism sector from us citizens.

GAUTENG - South Africa mourns the loss of veteran actor Don Mlangeni Nawa, who has passed away at the age of 65. His family confirmed his death on Wednesday, on 16 April, though the cause has not been disclosed.

Mlangeni was widely known various roles in the world of acting which he began on the theatre stage, where his passion for storytelling first took root. His on-screen career launched in 1993 with a memorable role in the Zulu drama Hlala Kwabafileyo, followed by a performance in the iconic Zulu film Ubambo Lwami, where he played David.

By 1995, he was featured in Cycle Simenon, but it was in 1998 that his stardom truly rose with the beloved role of Zebedee Matabane on the hit soap opera Isidingo. For 16 years, he brought the character to life with depth and charisma, earning him the Golden Horn Award for Best Actor in a TV Soap in 2006, with two further nominations in 2007 and 2010.

More recently, he starred in prominent productions such as Shaka iLembe and Netflix’s Savage Beauty, continuing to captivate audiences with his powerful performances.

In an emotional family statement, they said:

“He was the heart of our family, a loving father, brother, and friend. To the world, he was a gifted and respected actor whose presence lit up every stage and screen he graced. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the stories he told, and the love he gave so freely. We are deeply moved by the outpouring of love and support.
We kindly ask for privacy as we grieve this immense loss.”

South Africa — The Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club’s iconic Mardi Gras parade, a long-standing fixture in New Orleans since its founding in 1909, has come under renewed scrutiny for its portrayal of African culture—specifically from members of the Zulu people in South Africa who have voiced objections on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

The parade is known for its vibrant costumes, including grass skirts, feathered headdresses, and black makeup traditionally worn by participants to pay homage to Zulu warriors. But critics, including South Africans of Zulu heritage, argue that the parade’s portrayal is culturally insensitive, offensive, and perpetuates harmful stereotypes.

“What’s meant as celebration feels more like mockery,” one user posted on X, reflecting a growing sentiment among some South Africans that the New Orleans parade distorts rather than honors Zulu culture.

Concerns about the parade’s representation are not new. In 1956, NAACP field secretary Clarence Laws remarked that there was "a wide feeling that the parade degrades and ridicules the Negro race." In 1961, the African Students Union of the Americas described the display as “clowning” done in an “unrespectable way.”

In response to criticism, the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club has consistently defended its practices. The organization maintains that its makeup and attire are not connected to the racist legacy of blackface minstrelsy, but instead are symbols of pride, strength, and homage to African heritage.

“Our traditions were created to honor African and African American culture, not to mock it,” the club stated. “We reject any comparison to blackface and stand by our historical context and intent.”

However, the inclusion of non-Black participants in the parade about 10% of members are white has further complicated the debate. While many in the African American community support the parade as a unique cultural tradition, others express discomfort at seeing white riders in dark makeup, which they say can evoke painful reminders of minstrel shows.

Louisiana State Senator J.P. Morrell acknowledged the nuance of the issue: “This becomes more complex when white individuals participate alongside Black individuals in this context. The visuals matter.”

This isn’t the first time such controversies have reached global dimensions. In Lewes, England, a bonfire society that dressed in Zulu warrior costumes faced similar backlash. After engaging with South African performer Thanda Gumede in 2017, the group agreed to stop using black makeup and adjusted their costumes for cultural accuracy and sensitivity.

As cultural awareness and global discourse around appropriation evolve, the Zulu Club finds itself at a crossroads torn between preserving over a century of Mardi Gras tradition and responding to calls for more culturally respectful representation.

The ongoing debate raises important questions about where celebration ends, and appropriation begins and how communities can reconcile tradition with changing societal values.

Orlando, South Africa – A CAF Champions League match between Orlando Pirates and Algerian side MC Alger descended into chaos at Orlando Stadium, marking the second incident involving violence between a North African team and a South African side in recent weeks.

Tensions reached boiling point following the final whistle, with violent altercations breaking out on the field. Shockingly, some Pirates fans stormed the pitch and clashed with MC Alger players a rare and alarming scene in the CAF Champions League. This follows closely after a similar incident involving Espérance Sportive de Tunis and Mamelodi Sundowns, where fans were met with heavy police suppression despite the home side’s win.

Critics are now demanding swift action from CAF. “This is not how we do it, Pirates. I’ve never seen this before not even in North Africa. This is barbaric and disgraceful,” said one furious football analyst. “CAF must set an example. The safety of MC Alger was the responsibility of Pirates, and they failed.”

Some supporters were seen attacking both MC Alger and Pirates players—an indication of the chaotic and undisciplined behavior that overshadowed the spirit of the game.

April 10, 2025 — Tensions between the United States and China have reached new heights today as both countries take drastic economic measures that are expected to have far-reaching consequences.

In an unexpected move, President Donald Trump has announced a 90-day pause on tariffs for all countries, lowering rates to a uniform 10%, effective immediately. However, China is the notable exception. Tariffs on Chinese imports will instead surge to a staggering 125%, a dramatic escalation that comes into effect without delay.

This move is the latest chapter in the ongoing US-China trade war, which has seen a series of retaliatory measures in recent weeks. In direct response, China has retaliated by imposing an 84% tariff on all U.S. imports, beginning tomorrow. This marks a significant escalation from the earlier 104% tariff that the U.S. had placed on Chinese goods.

China’s Currency and Financial Moves
As part of its broader strategy, China’s central bank, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), has also ordered state-owned banks to cut back on purchases of U.S. dollars. This informal directive, known as window guidance, urges greater scrutiny of transactions involving the dollar. The goal is to stabilize the yuan, which has seen a 1.3% depreciation this month, dipping to 7.35 yuan per dollar onshore. Offshore rates have reached record lows, putting additional pressure on China’s economy.

In response to the falling currency, large state banks have been actively selling dollars and buying yuan, in an attempt to halt the depreciation. The PBOC has stressed its commitment to avoiding drastic devaluation of the yuan while working to maintain stability in the financial markets.

Global Economic Fallout
The situation is already taking a toll on global markets, with increasing uncertainty spreading across financial sectors. Analysts warn that this escalation in tariffs and currency measures could lead to prolonged economic disruption, not only affecting the two countries involved but potentially reverberating throughout the global economy.

China's commerce ministry warned the tariffs risked "severely" impacting the global economy, but stressed that "the door to dialogue is open".

"We hope the US will meet China halfway, and, based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation, properly resolve differences through dialogue and consultation," Commerce Ministry spokeswoman He Yongqian said.

As the trade war intensifies, the world watches closely to see how these unprecedented measures will impact the international trade landscape and broader financial stability.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has strongly denied reports that it deployed soldiers to monitor a recent community march against gender-based violence (GBV) in Matatiele, Eastern Cape, through a media statement released on their media media accounts. This follows growing public concern and political pressure after members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and ActionSA wrote a formal letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, seeking clarity in accordance with Section 201, Chapter 2 and 3 of the Constitution regarding the alleged deployment.

In a media statement released on Wednesday, 9 April 2025, the SANDF addressed what it called misleading reports suggesting that its personnel had been sent specifically to oversee the peaceful community gathering. The march, which was organized to raise awareness about the ongoing crisis of GBV, was reportedly overshadowed by the unexpected presence of uniformed soldiers in the area.

“The SANDF can confirm that there has been no such deployment,” the statement read. “We wish to state that the SANDF has members in the area on border safeguarding duties and nothing else.”

The SANDF emphasized that the presence of its soldiers was not related to the march, but rather part of ongoing national operations to protect South Africa’s borders. However, the timing of their presence caused confusion and concern among participants of the march and members of the public, with some perceiving it as an intimidation tactic or inappropriate militarization of a civilian-led event.

The controversy was further fueled when both the EFF and ActionSA collectively addressed a letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, raising constitutional concerns over the potential misuse of military forces in domestic matters. Section 201 of the Constitution outlines the authority and conditions under which the SANDF can be deployed within South Africa’s borders, which can only be authorized by the President of the Republic. Specifically, Chapter 2 and 3 require the President to inform Parliament about any deployment of the Defence Force for internal operations, including reasons and duration of deployment.

Both political parties requested clarity on whether such procedures were followed, given the sensitive nature of the march and the constitutional implications of deploying soldiers in domestic, non-violent events and seeking the official letter that was sent to the Speaker of national Assembly by the  president.

In response, the SANDF expressed regret over any misunderstandings caused by the soldiers' presence during the march and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives against gender-based violence. 

“The SANDF is a gender-sensitive organisation and supports gender programs. We are cognisant of the unacceptable high levels of gender-based violence, and the prevalence of violence against women and children,” the statement added.

The Defence Force reiterated that it remains committed to national efforts to eliminate gender-based violence and will continue to support interventions led by institutions and communities to protect women and children.

The matter has raised broader questions about the transparency of military operations within the country, particularly in relation to civilian activities. Parliament is expected to deliberate on the matter following the letter from opposition parties, as citizens await a formal response from the Speaker’s office.

The SANDF has called for calm and encouraged the public to verify information through official channels to avoid misinformation and unnecessary panic.

Johannesburg - South African Communist Party (SACP) has called on the African National Congress (ANC) to remove the Democratic Alliance (DA) from the Government of National Unity (GNU), asserting that "there can never be two governments in one country." 

This appeal follows the DA's decision to vote against the recent budget, a move that has intensified tensions within the coalition.

SACP spokesperson Dr. Alex Mashilo emphasized that the DA's opposition to the budget indicates its misalignment with the GNU's objectives. He noted that a parliamentary majority is attainable without the DA's involvement, stating, "There is a 50% plus one majority in parliament excluding the DA, the Mkhonto Wesizwe (MKP), and others." 

The SACP has also criticized the budget's provisions, particularly the increase in Value Added Tax (VAT), arguing that it disproportionately affects the poor and working-class citizens.

In response, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula acknowledged the DA's stance and indicated that the ANC's leadership would deliberate on the matter. He remarked, "If you say you don’t want the Budget at all costs, you walk and nobody said you must walk. Now we are given a burden to decide the DA’s fate in GNU. It can’t be our problem. They have decided." 

The DA has yet to announce its position regarding its future in the GNU. Meanwhile, other political entities, such as ActionSA, have expressed readiness to join the coalition if the DA exits. 

As the situation unfolds, the stability of the GNU remains uncertain, with ongoing discussions among coalition partners and stakeholders. The ANC is expected to engage with its allies, including the SACP and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), to navigate the current political landscape.

Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, has faced significant public backlash after comments made regarding the ongoing investigation into the Cwecwe case. In his initial statement, Mchunu had referred to the principal of Bergview College as a suspect, which led to widespread speculation and confusion. This was further exacerbated when reports surfaced suggesting, he has confirmed that the principal's DNA had been collected as part of the investigation.

In response to the backlash, the Minister of Police issued a clarification, stating that Mchunu had never suggested that the principal’s DNA was taken. According to the statement, the DNA testing was conducted solely in relation to the minor involved in the case. The Minister confirmed that three persons of interest had been identified, though the principal was not one of them. Mchunu has been accused of protecting the principal by silencing the public with lies

The clarification comes after a wave of confusion among the public, who had been led to believe the principal’s involvement in the case was more significant than initially thought. Citizens expressed feelings of frustration and disillusionment, particularly after learning the truth behind the initial miscommunication.

Minister Mchunu also urged the public to rely on official sources for updates, emphasizing the importance of avoiding the spread of unverified information, which only exacerbates public distress. He reassured the public that the investigation is in the capable hands of a Major-General, ensuring that all necessary procedures are being followed to bring clarity and justice.

Johannesburg — Radio personality and former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) spokesperson Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi has challenged Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen over recent claims involving the role of "big business" in coalition politics.

Speaking out after Steenhuisen’s comments during a media briefing in eThekwini, Ndlozi raised concerns about transparency and accountability within the Government of National Unity (GNU). The DA leader had alleged that major business players had encouraged his party to remain part of the GNU, especially amid tensions surrounding a suggested increase in Value-Added Tax (VAT). The proposal had sparked uncertainty about the DA’s continued participation in the coalition government.

Ndlozi took issue with the vagueness of Steenhuisen’s remarks, particularly the absence of specific names or organizations. “Who are these 'big business' stakeholders?” Ndlozi questioned in a public statement. “Why should the public rely on anonymous influences when such important political decisions are at stake?”

He went on to challenge Steenhuisen to release the letter or communication he referenced, stating that South Africans deserve full disclosure on who is influencing key decisions in their government. According to Ndlozi, failing to do so undermines public trust and invites speculation about the integrity of the GNU.

The DA has yet to respond to Ndlozi’s demands. The coalition, formed after the 2024 general elections, has already faced pressure over policy disagreements, with the VAT debate marking one of the most contentious issues to date.

As the GNU continues navigating its internal dynamics, voices like Ndlozi’s reflect a broader concern about transparency and the balance of power between political actors and economic interests.

Johannesburg – On April 3, 2025, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) held the inauguration of its newly appointed Chief of Police, Patrick Jaca. The ceremony, which started at 10:00 AM, marked the end of a five-year vacancy for the position. The event took place at Johannesburg Stadium, where JMPD and SAPS officers gathered in support of the new chief.  

Jaca’s appointment comes with high expectations, as he is tasked with addressing the pressing challenges facing Johannesburg, including rising crime rates and illegal informal trading, particularly in the city center. Officials hope his leadership will also enhance the Protection Service Unit’s role in law enforcement, ensuring it receives greater recognition and resources to carry out its duties effectively.  

The JMPD ( Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department) is committed to maintaining safety and order in Johannesburg, with its responsibilities including traffic management, municipal law enforcement, and crime prevention. Jaca’s leadership is expected to bring significant improvements in these areas.

"For the last few years, we did not have a Chief of Police. The last time we had one was around 2018 to 2019. So, when we came into office, we decided to prioritize this appointment."

A 58-year-old teacher accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old primary school learner from a school in Makotopong, Limpopo, appeared in court today. According to Limpopo police, the alleged assaults began in November 2024 and continued until March 2025. The suspect, who taught at the school in Ga Mothiba Makotopong outside Polokwane, was arrested following an extensive investigation by the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit. Preliminary findings suggest the 13-year-old female learner was assaulted multiple times over the four-month period. Limpopo Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya condemned the incident, stating:

A Mamelodi Sundowns fan emerged as a hero after saving the life of an Esperance supporter during a violent clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and Espérance De Tunis fans at Loftus Versfeld Stadium last night. The altercation broke out following Sundowns' victory over the Tunisian side, Espérance, in a Champions League night on the high stake march.

As tensions escalated, a hooligans behavior from both sides took over parts of the stadium, creating a dangerous situation for spectators. Amid the chaos, a Tunisian supporter was on the verge of falling from level 3 inside the Stadium when a Sundowns fan stepped in, to prevent a potential tragedy.  

Eyewitnesses described the moment as a rare act of sportsmanship in an otherwise heated atmosphere. "It was shocking to see the violence, but this one fan showed true humanity," said a bystander.  

The incident has drawn criticism toward the unruly behavior of certain Esperance fans, with many calling for stricter security measures at international club matches.  

Despite the tension, the heroic act by the Sundowns supporter has been widely praised as a reminder that sports should unite rather than divide.
