A 58-year-old teacher accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old primary school learner from a school in Makotopong, Limpopo, appeared in court today. The case, which has sent shockwaves through the community, has been met with strict media restrictions, with the court ordering that the accused’s name and image not be published to protect the ongoing legal process and the victim’s identity.
According to Limpopo police, the alleged assaults began in November 2024 and continued until March 2025. The suspect, who taught at the school in Ga Mothiba Makotopong outside Polokwane, was arrested following an extensive investigation by the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit. Preliminary findings suggest the 13-year-old female learner was assaulted multiple times over the four-month period. The teacher reportedly fled after the allegations surfaced but was later apprehended.
Limpopo Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya condemned the incident, stating:
“Teachers are entrusted to protect and nurture our children, not harm them. This betrayal of trust is unacceptable.”
Community members in Makotopong have expressed outrage, with some voicing concerns over delays in the suspect’s initial arrest.
The case has reignited debates about learner safety in schools and the accountability of educators. The accused is expected to face charges of rape, with the prosecution emphasizing the severity of the allegations. The court adjourned proceedings to a later date for further investigation, leaving the community anxiously awaiting justice.
The Limpopo Department of Education has pledged support for the victim and her family, while authorities urge the public to refrain from speculation as the legal process unfolds.
