On April 1, while some were looking for a fun side of the day, South Africans across all nine provinces took to the streets for a nationwide shutdown, marching to the Department of Education in each province to express their frustration over an incident in Matatiele, Eastern Cape. The case involves 7-year-old Cwecwe, who was allegedly sexually assaulted on school premises at Bergview College in October 2024.

South Africans are demanding justice and action from law enforcement and the Department of Education.
Leano, a 12-year-old protester, said: "I am so happy about this movement, and I really hope that justice will be served."
From Joubert Park to the Department of Education in Marshalltown, the rally merged with other organizations, including Operation Dudula, which also supported the nationwide shutdown.
Zandile Dabula, a member of Operation Dudula, said: "We are calling upon all the other ‘Cwecwes’ in this country who are suffering silently so that we can no longer be silenced."
