The Spanish tactician, who has overseen a largely successful spell with the Buccaneers, will manage his final match on Tuesday against Lamontville Golden Arrows.
In a statement, the club expressed gratitude for Riveiro’s contributions and noted that the decision was made in good faith. For the remainder of the season, assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi and performance analyst Darrel Felix will oversee the team’s remaining fixtures.
The Orlando Pirates Chairman Irvin Khoza confirmed by stating the desired request by the spanish coach;
“Jose approached us a few weeks ago with a request to be released from his contract ahead of schedule, having signed with a new club," Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza said.
“Given the timing; amidst a series of crucial fixtures – we believed it was best to delay this announcement until after the Nedbank Cup Final. His contribution since joining the Club has been immense. We learned a lot from him, and he learned a lot from us.
“While we would have preferred to formally honour him with a proper send-off, we fully respect his decision to depart before the end of his tenure.”
Riveiro, known for his tactical discipline and calm leadership, joined Pirates in 2022 and led them to multiple victories, including MTN8 and Nedbank Cup triumphs. His early departure raises questions about the club’s future direction ahead of the new season.
Fans have taken to social media to wish the coach well as the club prepares for a key transition.
